Scottish Life was founded in Edinburgh in 1881 as a proprietary company, Scottish Life became a mutual in 1968.

On 1 July 2001, the company demutualised and transferred its business to The Royal London Mutual Insurance Society Limited, the UK's largest mutual life and pension company. Scottish Life is a division of Royal London and is the specialist pensions business within the Group, providing individual and group pensions to the market via intermediaries.

Scottish Life and Royal London's other intermediary businesses are based mainly in Edinburgh where 1,060 staff are employed, with 780 working in other parts of the UK and overseas (as at 31 December 2011).

Scottish Life provides specialist pensions to pension scheme trustees, employers and individuals, distributed through employee benefit consultants and financial advisers.

Bright Grey is a modern, forward-thinking protection specialist set up by the Royal London Group in 2003 to offer flexible protection solutions to suit today's lifestyles.

Recent improvements to its proposition include the introduction of a 'relevant life policy' which is unique in the market place, enhancements to its Income Cover for Sickness product, and the introduction of Unipass security to its adviser website.

Bright Grey was once again awarded 5 stars in the coveted Financial Adviser Service Awards at the end of 2010, to make this 3 years in a row. It also retained its 'eee' e-excellence rating from the Finance & Technology Research Centre for online services in all 4 categories, for 2010. And it won Best Mortgage Protection Provider at the 2010 Mortgage Strategy awards and won - jointly with Scottish Provident - Best Protection Provider at the 2010 Sesame awards.

Bright Grey also became an Investor in People company, achieving a highly prestigious gold award - a feat achieved by less than 1% of recognised Investors in People companies.
