A delegation of senior Shanghai financiers is visiting Edinburgh on Thursday and Friday this week (26 and 27 November) in recognition of the city’s expertise in financial services.
The group is headed by Zhang Weiguo, vice president of the Bank of Shanghai and includes the executive vice principle of the Shanghai Stock Exchange and senior representatives from the People’s Bank of China, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and the China Securities Regulatory Commission.
The visit, organised by Oxford University, working with Scottish Financial Enterprise, will focus on Edinburgh’s success in fund management. The programme includes meetings with Edinburgh fund managers in addition to meetings with Scotland’s First Minister and Scottish Development International.
Owen Kelly, chief executive of Scottish Financial Enterprise said:
“ There is no doubt in the industry of the growth in financial services in Asia, particularly in China in the coming years.
“ Shanghai is one of the key financial services centres in China. This senior delegation rightly recognises Edinburgh as an international centre of fund management expertise. We are delighted to host this visit, and will be looking to make mutually beneficial connections for business in the future.”
Stephen Reid, programme director for Scotland, Leadership Programmes for China at Oxford University, said:
“Scotland is well placed to contribute its expertise to this delegation’s UK visit, having built its own financial services sector into Europe’s fourth largest in equity assets. A number of Edinburgh fund managers are already working successfully across China, and the visit to Edinburgh will build further links between the financial communities of Scotland and China.”
