We welcomed Paul Myners OBE (Lord Myners) to a Business Briefing with our members on Friday morning. As he says himself, he is a businessman rather than a politician, who has joined the government to put his expertise in commerce to the service of the public. That showed in the way he spoke. He was politic, of course, as all governments in the UK operate on the basis of collective responsibility and he is necessarily part of that. But he was also candid and direct, drawing extensively on his experience of dealing with Scottish-based investors and shareholders. He fielded a wide range of questions, on topics including UK government shareholdings in banks, protectionism, whether we need a new version of Glass-Steagall, the possible length of the recession, start-ups and entrepreneurship, competition in financial services and mutualisation.
