Blog: The SFE YP 2019 year in review

Season’s greetings SFE Young Professionals! Following on from our annual flagship event at the Scottish Parliament, it’s only fitting we bring you a snapshot of our success in 2019; personal reflections; and say a huge thank you for your ongoing support.

As the network for young people in financial services, we exist to ensure your voice is heard and helps shape the future of our industry. So what have the SFE YP committee achieved this year?

We have taken an inward look and reflected on our purpose, spending a lot of the year focusing on three items:

  1. Our strategy, refocusing to ensure we deliver real value to our members
  2. Our way of working, realigning our structure so we can collaborate more effectively
  3. Our presence, regionalising to create communities in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

This year we committed ourselves to five clear strategic goals that focus on bringing learning and development opportunities to members, fostering networking and collaboration, and representing our existing members and the future generation of financial services employees. We are committed to delivering against these strategic goals and hope you will join with us to achieve them.

We also successfully reshaped the committee, appointing two deputy chairs in Q3 and creating three strategic work-streams that align to the SFE strategy: Skills & Talent; Innovation; and the National Partnership for Societal Impact. With clearer remits we hope to increasingly bring unique opportunities for you to get involved in pan-industry efforts to create change across our sector. Watch this space, with lots to come in Q1 from Skills & Talent in particular.

On events, we continued to bring engaging networking opportunities and speaker events directly to our members as well as in schools and universities. This has fed our higher engagement (and motivated our  enthusiastic committee) to grow our membership by 45%! With our new Glashow hub we can only get bigger, becoming more representative of the modern financial industry and with greater clout to make a difference.

To round off the year, we three chairs (two wise ladies and a man!) had the privilege of representing the SFE Young Professionals at the Scottish Financial Enterprise December Board. There has been a lot of hard work and collaboration in 2019 which has led to a list of roaring successes that we were excited to share with SFE. It was a fantastic way to sign off 2019 and signal our hope for greater collaboration in 2020. We would like to thank the SFE team for their ongoing enthusiasm and support for what we do.

It has been a fantastic, transformational year for SFE YP. with a lot in store for 2020. A sneak peak:

- Four (BIG!) flagship events

- Themed debates, talks and networking events

- Unique pan-industry opportunities aligned to the SFE strategy

- Insight driven blogs and articles

So that’s all from us! A massive thank you for your support in making 2019 a stellar year. We look forward to seeing many of you in 2020 and please do get in touch to share your views on what has gone well and how we may improve.

In the interim, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Best wishes,

Amy McDaid, Chair

Milly Dent, Deputy Chair (Edinburgh)

Neil Scott, Deputy Chair (Glasgow)
