The Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland was founded in 1875 and is the world’s oldest banking Institute.  In 1976 and 1991 it received Royal Charters of Incorporation.

The main aims of the Institute are to improve the status and influence and professionalism of its members and other professionals within the financial services industry; to improve and extend the knowledge and expertise of those in the financial services industry; to promote the continued study of financial services establishing links with other professional or educational bodies both nationally and internationally.  It is also honoured to have 7 of the main banks as Corporate Patrons.

The Institute’s student members have, in the past, come mainly from banks but this situation is rapidly changing.  It provides quality educational programmes by distance learning with an excellent tutor support network available to all students, as well as block release through the CIOBS Academy.  It now develops its courses and qualifications to meet the needs and challenges of the wider financial services community, with an increasing number of non-bank companies putting staff forward for one or more of our qualifications.  It also has a role in teaching school children about finances through the popular Financial Education Partnership.

The qualifications are recognised throughout the finance industry and also by universities, allowing students to articulate to university degrees, MBAs and other professional qualifications.  It is now the first professional body to have it’s qualifications detailed within the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework.

In 2000 The Privy Council granted permission for the Institute to designate its Members and Fellows as a ‘Chartered Banker’.  It is the most prestigious qualification in the world for bankers and financial services practitioners, recognising the skills, knowledge and professionalism which they possess.  The designation is given to those who are MCIBS or FCIBS and who participate annually in the Institute’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme.

The Institute is also unique in that it provides the designation of Professional Mortgage Adviser to anyone who has completed any of the recognised mortgage qualifications and undertake their CPD on an annual basis, as well as becoming an affiliate member.  They are then allowed to use the letters PMA after their name.

The District Centres of the Institute, from Shetland to London , allow members to meet regularly for professional CPD development and social activities.  The Institute’s bi-monthly magazine ‘The Scottish Banker’, explores and comments on the pertinent issues which affect today’s financial services industry.

We are proud of our pedigree and tradition and will continue our commitment to uphold the integrity of the banking and financial services industries through the ongoing development of our professional qualifications.
