Creating space for every voice: Reflections on a powerful conversation about disability, inclusion, and equity
The SFEYP Mental Health and Wellbeing & Skills and Inclusion workstreams had the honour of hosting a deeply moving and insightful conversation with three remarkable individuals: Dr Cor Hutton MBE, Kasia Zduniak, and Derek McEwan.
Together, we explored the nuanced realities of visible and invisible disabilities in the workplace—and how experiences with disability shape not only individual career journeys, but also the broader culture and efficacy of our organisations.
Their insights and personal stories were powerful reminders of the importance of designing inclusive environments where everyone can thrive. What made this conversation so impactful wasn’t just the professional expertise each speaker brought to the table, but their willingness to share personal stories—stories that challenged assumptions, sparked empathy, and called for real, systemic change.
One of the most powerful messages that emerged was this:
Equity and inclusion should never be an afterthought.
They must be intentionally embedded into our policies, practices, and everyday interactions.
Too often, disability inclusion is approached reactively—addressed only when someone discloses a need or when a barrier becomes visible. But many disabilities are not immediately apparent, and the impacts can be profound. From navigating inaccessible systems to facing unconscious bias, the challenges are real—and they require proactive, thoughtful solutions and the creation of an environment where individuals feel able to speak up if something isn’t right.
We need to build workplaces that are flexible by design, not by exception. That means listening, learning, and creating systems that adapt to people—not the other way around.
A heartfelt thank you to our incredible panel for their honesty, courage, and advocacy. Huge thanks to all at Scottish Financial Enterprise Young Professionals for making this happen and the BNP team for facilitating such an important and inspiring breakfast event.
Let’s keep the conversation going—and more importantly, let’s turn these conversations into action.
