Liam Hilson
Career Ready Intern

At SFE, we're passionate about nurturing emerging talent, and welcoming Liam Hilson as our Career Ready intern has been a truly rewarding experience. We understand that stepping into the professional world can be a big leap, and we strive to make that transition as smooth and enriching as possible. Liam was keen to get a head start, even meeting some of the team before his official start date, which we felt was a fantastic initiative on his part. This proactive approach set the tone for a highly successful four weeks. Before Liam finished with us we asked him to share some of his experiences:

“Before my internship I didn’t really know what to expect when I went into the workplace. I got told some of stuff that I could be doing in my 4 weeks at SFE, but before my internship started, I went into the office to meet some of the team. I feel like was a good idea, so I wasn’t turning up on my first day only knowing my mentor from the workplace, as I was the only Career Ready mentee going to SFE.

“On my first day I started with going into the workplace and getting setup with my laptop, email and keys for the building. In the first hour of being there we had a team meeting that the full team attends every Monday. In the team meeting I got to meet the rest of the team. In the meeting everyone introduced themselves and their role at SFE.

“During the 4 weeks of being at SFE I had 1-1s with most the team to hear about what their roles are more in depth; they would also let me know about any tasks that they would have liked for me to do in my time with SFE. I feel like I have developed and progressed with my skills, such as communication, time management, organisational skills, during the internship. I also learned about how easier using two screens is compared to one and I’ll never go back.

“I was welcomed quickly and felt like I was trusted to get on my work myself without anyone having to check up on me, as well as knowing if I had any questions I could ask them.

“I have really enjoyed my time with SFE and that is down to the SFE team, and I’ve enjoyed most the work I have been given to complete. I have attended in person events and online events I attended the Barclays Armed Forces Event and online webinars and more.

“My advice to future Career Ready students would be, try your best and and attempt all the work your being given because you’ll never know if you like it until it’s been completed. I’d also say to always go into the workplace with a positive and respectful attitude. I was originally wanted to become a joiner as it’s a hands-on job and thought of office jobs as boring because I thought you would be sat at desk all day, every day, which I have realised isn’t true. The internship has made me realise that I might not go to college next year for joinery and would like to find a job in financial services.”
