1. What first sparked your interest in working in the financial sector, and how did that lead to the specific role you're in now?
My journey into the financial sector was quite unexpected! When I was younger, my ambitions were firmly set on becoming a doctor. While heading to meet with my guidance teacher about preparing for my medical school entry exams, I stumbled upon an apprenticeship listing for RBS on my school’s community board. It struck me as a fantastic opportunity to gain practical experience that would bolster my university applications and confidence for pending interviews.
So, at 16 I decided to apply, and as I navigated through the entry tests and telephone interviews, my confidence grew with each success. When I landed a face-to-face interview for the Relationship Management Apprenticeship scheme, I felt a sense of genuine possibility. Two weeks later, I found myself accepting an offer to start my apprenticeship during a lunch break at school, where there was no hesitation!
That apprenticeship was the turning point that equipped me with essential soft skills and technical know-how. Fast forward nearly a decade, and I’ve built a fantastic career in relationship management across both commercial and retail banking.
For the last 4.5 years, I've been thriving in Coutts & Co’s Private Banking and Wealth Management arm. The bank has truly nurtured my growth, allowing me to carve my own pathway, which ultimately led me to my current role as a Private Banker. I can say without a doubt that the joy and privilege I feel in this position stems directly from the opportunities that apprenticeship afforded me.
2. Can you describe the journey that brought you to your current role — and what made you choose that particular path?
My journey has been rich and rewarding. Initially, I was swept up in the traditional pursuit of gaining higher education/a university degree, but the real-world experience offered by the apprenticeship reshaped my perspective entirely.
The bank’s culture of fostering individual development has been invaluable. It has supported my pursuit of qualifications and provided a platform that paved the way for my career progression. Each step has been a building block, and I am proud to say that I stand where I am today because of a path I initially viewed with uncertainty. Working for a large financial institution, there are so many doors that you can open at every point in your career, which has allowed me to gather experience across retail, commercial and private banking.
3. Were there any key moments, mentors, or experiences that helped you realise this was the right fit for you?
Reflecting on my journey, there were a few key moments and individuals who played significant roles – one stands out from the rest, however.
Back when I was considering the apprenticeship, I approached our part-time careers adviser, who was incredibly supportive. Her enthusiasm and belief in my potential were palpable; I can still picture her beaming smile when I shared the news of my success in securing the role!
Her guidance transformed my initial view of the apprenticeship from “just a good learning experience” into a determination to succeed and kick-start a meaningful career in banking. That encouragement helped solidify my belief that I was on the right path, and it was the catalyst I needed to embrace a new and uncertain direction.
4. What aspects of your current role do you find most fulfilling, and did that align with what you expected when you started?
Undoubtedly, it’s the people! I have the honour of working alongside talented and supportive colleagues, which fosters an environment ripe for professional and personal growth. This empowers me to assist our clients in achieving their financial aspirations, making a truly significant impact in their lives.
Every interaction offers an opportunity to meet fascinating individuals with diverse perspectives, enriching my own development. When you work hard to build trust and credibility, to then crafting bespoke financial solutions tailored to your clients’ goals and seeing this pay off, the satisfaction that follows is hard to put into words. Knowing that I’ve played a role in their journey is a reward that is hard to quantify.
5. Looking back, is there anything you would tell your younger self (or someone starting out) about finding a role in finance that truly fits them?
If I could impart any wisdom to my younger self or anyone embarking on a career in finance, it would be this: don’t hesitate to explore the vast array of opportunities that exist within the industry. When I mention that I work in a bank, many assume I am a cashier in a branch, but the variety of roles available is astounding—ranging from HR to Legal, Technology, Operations, and Asset Management.
